Balancing the Divine Within: A Reflection on "Deho Devalayaha"

Dear readers

Namasthe!

Actually, It is a cool drizzling afternoon today, the kind of day that tempts most people to unwind and enjoy their weekend. But for me, it was just another working day😶.

As I navigated through my tasks, I couldn't help but notice the deep, almost meditative discussion unfolding between my husband, Vishnu Chittan , and my brother, Harish Sandilya. They had become spiritual giants for the moment 😇, exploring the profound wisdom of our ancient texts. Like a child, I found myself drawn into their conversation, listening with rapt attention as they delved into the timeless concept of "Deho Devalayaha," a Sanskrit saying that translates to "the body is a temple."

Their discussion began with the idea that within each of us resides a divine trio: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Brahma, the creator, finds his place in our intellect (buddhi), where our thoughts and innovations originate. Vishnu, the preserver, is represented by our physical body (sthithi kaara), which sustains life and maintains balance. Shiva, the destroyer, is the energy of our heart (laya kaara), the source of rhythm and transformation.

They spoke about how Shiva, as the embodiment of energy, breathes life into Vishnu. Without Shiva's pulse, Vishnu—the physical body—cannot thrive. Yet, if Vishnu, the very vessel of our existence, were to cease, so too would Shiva, for they are interdependent. This interplay between the heart and the body, between energy and form, underscores the delicate balance required to sustain life.

The Essential Role of Prakriti: The Power of the Feminine

As the rain outside continued to fall, they brought up the concept of Prakriti, the feminine force and natural world that harmonizes the divine elements within us. They were discussing how Prakriti, or nature, is essential to maintaining the balance between Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Prakriti symbolizes the nurturing and creative energies that allow life to flourish.

In the realm of human relationships, this role is often embodied by a spouse/ satsang mate, who supports and sustains not only the physical and emotional well-being of their partner/ mates but also creates an environment where intellect, body, and heart can coexist in harmony. The union of Prakriti and Purusha (the consciousness) is a celebration of life’s ultimate purpose—a balanced, fulfilled existence.

The wisdom of "Deho Devalayaha" serves as a beautiful reminder that our bodies are not merely vessels but sacred temples that house the divine. The delicate balance between Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva within us is one that requires the nurturing touch of Prakriti to thrive. On that cool, drizzling afternoon, as I listened to my husband and brother unravel these spiritual truths, I realized that the essence of life lies in this balance. It is a beauty of energies, sustained by love, respect, and the awareness that within each of us flows a sacred, interconnected force.

Have a Good day.

With love
